Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy is a form of mental health treatment designed to help individuals who have experienced traumatic events. It aims to address and alleviate the emotional and psychological effects of trauma, which can include a wide range of experiences such as physical or sexual abuse, accidents, natural disasters, combat, and other distressing events. The primary goals of trauma therapy are to help individuals process their trauma, reduce trauma-related symptoms, and improve their overall functioning and quality of life. We will use tools such as:

  1. The Window of Tolerance: see PDF

  2. Polyvagal Theory: see PDF

  3. Somatic Experiencing (SE)

  4. Internal Family Systems (IFS)

  5. Mindfulness

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy aims at helping couples resolve conflicts, improve communication, and strengthen their relationship. It provides a safe and supportive environment where partners can openly discuss their feelings, thoughts, and issues under the guidance of a trained therapist. The primary goals of couples therapy are to enhance understanding, rebuild trust, and promote healthier and more satisfying relationships.

Key components and approaches I use in couples therapy include:

  1. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): EFT focuses on improving emotional connection and attachment between partners. It helps them understand and express their underlying emotions and needs.

  2. Gottman Method: Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, this method is based on extensive research and focuses on building relationship skills, managing conflict, and enhancing intimacy and friendship.

  3. Communication Skills: I often teach couples effective communication techniques to help them express their needs and listen to each other more empathetically.

  4. Conflict Resolution: My clients will learn strategies for resolving disputes in a constructive manner, focusing on problem-solving rather than blame.

  5. Identifying Patterns: Therapists help couples recognize negative patterns in their interactions and work on changing those dynamics.

  6. Trauma Psychoeducation: I will provide trauma-informed information about relationship dynamics, attachment styles, flight-fight-freeze responses, and other relevant topics to help couples understand and improve their interactions.

The process and duration of therapy can vary depending on the couple's needs and the severity of their issues.

ADHD Support

Therapy helps individuals with ADHD by providing strategies to manage symptoms and improve daily functioning. Key therapeutic approaches I use include:

  1. Behavioral Therapy: Focuses on modifying behaviors and establishing routines.

  2. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps change negative thought patterns and develop problem-solving skills.

  3. Social Skills Training: Improves communication, conflict resolution, and empathy.

  4. Mindfulness-Based Interventions: Enhances focus and reduces impulsivity through mindfulness practices.

  5. Executive Function Coaching: Develops skills for time management, planning, and self-monitoring.

  6. Psychoeducation: Educates individuals and couples about ADHD and coping strategies.

Therapy can improve self-esteem, relationships, academic and occupational success, and reduce stress and anxiety. It's most effective when tailored to the individual's needs and combined with other treatments like medication and lifestyle changes.

Mood Disorders

Therapy is highly effective in treating anxiety and depression by providing individuals with strategies to manage symptoms, understand underlying causes, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Here’s how I approach working with anxiety and depression with clients:

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT identifies and challenges negative thoughts, encourages engaging in positive activities, and develops coping skills.

  2. Interpersonal Therapy (IPT): IPT improves relationships, resolves interpersonal conflicts, helps adapt to life changes, and provides support for grief and loss.

  3. Psychodynamic Therapy: This theory explores past experiences and unconscious processes to gain insight and resolve internal conflicts.

  4. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT manages emotional responses, tolerates distress, uses mindfulness strategies, and improves interpersonal effectiveness.

  5. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): EFT focuses on improving emotional connection and attachment with self and with others. It helps clients understand and express their underlying emotions and needs.
